Wisdom Teeth FAQs
Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Wisdom teeth (third molars) often lack space to erupt properly, leading to: - Impaction (stuck in bone/gum) - Crowding of other teeth - Infection and pain - Difficulty cleaning - Cyst formation
Does extraction hurt?
No. The tooth and surrounding area are numbed with local anesthetic before extraction. You'll feel pressure but not pain.
What's normal after extraction?
**First 24 hours:** - Bleeding (continues for 30-60 minutes) - Swelling and pain - Difficulty opening mouth
**Days 2-7:** - Peak swelling (days 2-3) - Bruising may appear - Gradual pain improvement
**After 1 week:** - Swelling decreases - Most return to normal diet - Stitches may dissolve
Can I drive home?
No. General anesthesia/twilight sedation requires someone to drive you. Arrange transport in advance.
When can I eat normally?
- Day 1: Soft foods (soup, yogurt, ice cream)
- Days 2-3: Soft to semi-soft foods
- Week 2+: Most foods, avoiding very hot or hard foods
- Week 4+: Normal diet
