Overview
Facial reconstruction surgery restores form and function to the face and oral cavity following cancer surgery, trauma, or other complex conditions. Mr Shahme Farook has advanced training in reconstructive techniques, including microvascular surgery — the most sophisticated approach to tissue reconstruction available.
He has served as international faculty on courses in head and neck free flap reconstruction and facial trauma management, reflecting his standing as an expert in these technically demanding fields.
Microvascular free flap reconstruction
Microvascular free flap surgery involves transferring tissue — skin, muscle, bone, or a combination — from a donor site elsewhere in the body to reconstruct a defect in the face or oral cavity. The transferred tissue is kept alive by reconnecting its blood vessels to those at the recipient site using microsurgical techniques.
This approach allows large and complex defects following cancer resection — including those involving the jaw, tongue, floor of mouth, and cheek — to be reconstructed in a single operation, with excellent long-term functional and aesthetic results.
Mr Farook has extensive experience in free flap reconstruction and has published research on microvascular reconstruction outcomes.
- Microvascular free tissue transfer (free flap reconstruction)
- Oral reconstruction following tumour resection
- Jaw reconstruction
- Soft tissue facial reconstruction
- Re-exploration of free flap
- Local flap reconstruction
Facial trauma surgery
Facial trauma encompasses injuries to the bones and soft tissues of the face, including fractures of the jaw, cheekbones, orbital bones, and nasal structures, as well as lacerations and dentoalveolar injuries.
Mr Farook has significant expertise in the management of facial trauma. He has contributed to research on the use of telemedicine in assessing paediatric facial lacerations and has taught facial trauma management at international courses.
- Management of facial fractures
- Orbital floor and zygomatic (cheekbone) fractures
- Mandibular (jaw) fractures
- Midface fractures
- Soft tissue lacerations of the face
- Dentoalveolar trauma (teeth and supporting bone injuries)
