Overview: lung cancer
Lung cancer manifests within the cells making up the lungs — sponge-like organs in the chest that bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide.
Non-small cell lung cancer
The most common form. Includes adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.
Small cell lung cancer
Less common but typically spreads faster. Requires prompt, expert management.
Am I at risk for lung cancer?
While it is difficult to know if you are at risk, the following factors may increase likelihood:
- Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke
- Exposure to asbestos
- Exposure to radon
- Exposure to chemicals like coal products and arsenic
- Prior radiation therapy to the chest (e.g. for lymphoma)
- Air pollution
