About salivary gland surgery
The parotid gland (in front of the ear) and submandibular gland (under the jaw) can both develop benign tumours (pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumour), inflammatory conditions (chronic sialadenitis, IgG4 disease), stones (sialolithiasis), and — less commonly — malignant tumours. Diagnosis combines ultrasound, MRI where indicated, and fine-needle aspiration cytology. Treatment ranges from sialendoscopy (a keyhole procedure using a 1.3mm scope passed up the duct to remove stones) to superficial or total parotidectomy with continuous facial nerve monitoring. Mr Farook always uses intraoperative facial nerve monitoring for parotid surgery.
