Surgical treatment of parotid lumps, submandibular gland disease and salivary duct stones.
Salivary Gland Surgery
Salivary gland surgery ranges from a 30-minute stone removal to a formal parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. Every case at Mr Farook's practice includes a nerve monitor and consultant-led facial nerve dissection.
About salivary gland surgery
The parotid gland (in front of the ear) and submandibular gland (under the jaw) can both develop benign tumours (pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumour), inflammatory conditions (chronic sialadenitis, IgG4 disease), stones (sialolithiasis), and — less commonly — malignant tumours. Diagnosis combines ultrasound, MRI where indicated, and fine-needle aspiration cytology. Treatment ranges from sialendoscopy (a keyhole procedure using a 1.3mm scope passed up the duct to remove stones) to superficial or total parotidectomy with continuous facial nerve monitoring. Mr Farook always uses intraoperative facial nerve monitoring for parotid surgery.
